The areas Kahurangiariki explores through this work include tikanga, re-contextualising traditional attitudes and methodologies into her practice, and activating a modern space with ancient ways. She also acknowledges the potential slippage between pre-colonial carving and the carving she made with the technology available and modern context. While exploring different methods of respecting death and acknowledging the presence of tupuna that are still with us, Kahurangiariki implements a Māori cosmological perspective into a white-walled space. Ultimately this is about moving ways forward and bringing our tupuna and Māori worldview forward with us.
